NH-D15 is awesome. I have the same case as you the define r6 and when the case was stock temps were always very acceptable (for me). I have now upgraded/modified my R6 with the meshify S2 face and its even better. currently got HandBreak running converting movies. all cores @ 4.3ghz (ryzen master auto oc) 100% load and temps are fluctuating Noctua are consistently quiet in ways that close competitors like Arctic often fall short of. For example, Arctic fans are known to be silent across most of their RPM range except for around 1000 RPM, where the motor is prone to making a humming noise. This does not happen with Noctua. They aren’t overrated. 13600K running hot on NH-D15S. I recently upgraded my PC from a 5820K with a GTX 980 to a 13600k with a GTx3090. I used the NH-D15s from the previous build, but had to the buy the adapter NM-i17XX MP83 in order for it to fit. I can't run ANY multithreaded synthetic benchmark without the 13600 thermal throttling around 10-15%.But that's the case, not the board. So long as the case fits your nh-d15 you should be fine, it's a taller air cooler. My nh-d15s sticks out a bit further than a 3080 so even if the 4090 is a tad wider (mobo to side panel) than the 3080 should still fit. Just be sure to have ample room for airflow. And enough case depth to handle the card
The Noctua NH-D12L is a powerful air cooler that does not have to hide behind the Noctua NH-D15. The limitations in case compatibility can be countered somewhat with the Noctua NH-D12L because The top fans would almost touch the CPU heatsink on my D15 and kind of disrupts the flow there. The rear exhaust fan is also super important with this case especially with a GPU like that because a lot of the heat from the GPU goes straight into the CPU heatsink.
